A Heartfelt Journey of Art, Culture, and Connection, From Makapanstad to Chicago!
What started as a simple idea around sharing creativity has blossomed into something truly extraordinary, a cross-continental collaboration that threads together culture, creativity, and community in the most beautiful way.
On Friday, 30 May, the pupils of Hamilton Elementary School in Chicago proudly unveiled a collection of hand-stitched South African crafts at their Global Arts Fair. Chosen to represent South Africa, The Heartfelt Project was featured at the fair as a symbol of cultural exchange and the power of connection through art. From the hands of our talented Heartfelt ladies in Makapanstad to the little hands of young pupils in Chicago, this collaboration has stitched together two worlds through the shared language of creativity.
We are deeply honoured to have been part of this remarkable event and for the opportunity to have our recently released short documentary, Martha: A Heartfelt South African Story, showcased at the event.
Over the past few weeks, our Heartfelt ladies have been lovingly cutting and preparing craft kits, each pattern hand-cut and assembled with care and purpose. These kits were then shipped to Hamilton Elementary, where eager young learners took up the needle and thread to bring each piece to life, one stitch at a time. It’s a process that has taught patience, respect for other cultures, and the joy of making something with your own hands.
The results? A joyful fusion of South African artistry and youthful enthusiasm, every piece is unique, and every stitch represents shared learning and global connection. “The Middle Schoolers have been so inspired. Since the Fair, several have just wandered into the ArtLab wanting to sew – completely unprompted. It’s been truly touching to see how much the Ladies have sparked their creativity and confidence. What a beautiful journey to witness.” Says Liz Hay, who spearheaded the Global Arts fair and formed the collaborative efforts with Heartfelt through her cousin Jo-Anne Hay, who is a long-time friend, and consultant to The Heartfelt Project.
The collaboration doesn’t stop there. In addition to the student-made pieces, a selection of original Heartfelt creations, handcrafted by the women of The Heartfelt Project, were available for purchase at the Global Arts Fair. “The response to the products was incredible – we sold out! People were genuinely blown away.” Adds Liz. We are thrilled with this outcome, with proceeds from the sales helping to support the work that we do.
This project has already caught the attention of the media and was recently featured on CBS Chicago, which was a moment of immense pride for all who have been a part of bringing this collaboration to life!
To the educators and students at Hamilton Elementary School, thank you. Thank you for believing in the power of art, for welcoming us into your art rooms, and for reminding us that even across oceans, we can find common ground in creativity.
To our Heartfelt ladies, your hands have not only crafted beautiful pieces but have also sown seeds of global friendship and inspired younger generations.
This Global Arts Fair is more than a celebration. It is a reminder that when we share stories through art, we build bridges. When we create with intention, we connect hearts. And when we work together, no matter the distance, something truly special happens.
Here’s to many more stitches across borders.
