Heartfelt Dolls help to heal hearts at the Smile Foundation. The Heartfelt ladies at our new Rosendal Project (where we have 20 sewing machines) have just finished a very special order for the Smile Foundation - a South African non-profit organization who make a difference to the lives of children with facial anomalies.
Heartfelt was commissioned by Michelle Gerszt, the Strategic Project Manager for the Smile Foundation to create 350 little dolls that are given to the children as part of their recovery treatment. The children have the opportunity to draw their face onto this doll reflecting how they view themselves and their self-image. The doll then becomes a transitory object which “goes through” the surgical process with them. They then redraw their “new face” on the other side and thus have a chance to develop an improved self-image. Each doll made by the Heartfelt ladies had a very special felt heart sewn on to it – to symbolised the children's own little hearts - and carried a message of love and hope to the children as they healed their little hearts after the traumas they had experienced.
